WHAT IS UGC NET?

The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is a prestigious examination in India that serves as a gateway for candidates aspiring to become Assistant Professors or secure Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), this examination evaluates the eligibility of candidates for these coveted positions in various disciplines. Let’s delve into the intricacies of the UGC NET examination and understand its significance.

New Guidelines : UGC NET 2024: Students with 4-Year UG Degree Can Directly Pursue PhD; Admission Criteria

In 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) changed the criteria for PhD admission and eligibility for the National Eligibility Test (NET). Now, students who completed a four-year undergraduate degree can directly apply for PhD programs and take the NET. They need at least a 7.5 GPA (or equivalent) in their undergraduate studies to qualify. Before, only those with a master’s degree and 55% marks could apply.

Students with four-year degrees can now pursue PhDs in any subject they choose, not just the one they studied in their bachelor’s. They must have at least 75% marks in their undergraduate program to be eligible. For reserved categories like SC, ST, OBC, EWS, and others, there’s a 5% relaxation in marks.

The registration for UGC NET 2024 is open until May 10, 2024. Those interested in PhD programs must take the NET and pass it. The exam will be held by the National Testing Agency from June 16, 2024.
