Nitish ended his aliance to the NDA and resigned from the Chief Minister. Nitish informed governor Phagu Singh Chouhan of his decision to leave the NDA and step down as the chief minister during their meeting. He then visited Rabri Devi, his predecessor, and accompanied her son Tejashwi to the governor’s mansion.

Together, the new “Mahagathbandhan” of the RJD, JDU, Congress, and Left has 164 MLAs in the 243-member state assembly. This is nearly a two-thirds majority, which is far more than what is needed to establish the government. With 79 MLAs, the RJD is the only party with more than one, followed by the BJP, which has 77 MLAs.

In the closely contested 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance won 125 seats, including 74 from the BJP, 43 from Nitish Kumar‘s Janata Dal (United), 4 from the Vikassheel Insaan Party, and 4 from the Hindustan Awaam Party (Secular). With this, the NDA surpassed the necessary 122-majority threshold to establish the government.

Even though Nitish has been chosen as the Mahagathbandhan’s leader and has made a claim to forming the government, it may take a few days for the other formalities, like the swearing-in of new ministers and the distribution of portfolios, to be completed. Tejaswhi will once again serve as deputy chief minister, and ministers from the parties of the Grand Alliance will be appointed in accordance to their numbers, it appears for the time being.
